Rwanda: Kabuye Sugar Factory has resumed its operations

The factory had closed its doors as a result of the rains that caused floods that affected sugarcane intensive areas and maintenance works. Out of the 2,000 hectares that the factory cultivates sugarcane, more than 700 hectares were destroyed by the rains in more than three months. The management of the factory confirms that this has contributed to the decrease in production.

In these 3 months, this company invested 300 million Rwandan francs in the reconstruction after the flood.  The closure of this factory has not affected the normal prices in the market as explained by Karangwa Cassien, Director of Business Development at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MINICOM).

10% of the sugar was produced by the Kabuye factory, while the rest was imported from outside Rwanda. Karangwa said that there was an increase in the amount of sugar imported into the region to fill the gap, so that it remains sufficient in the market, and he confirmed that there is enough in the EAC market and at a good price.

The management of the Kabuye sugar factory says that it has plans to build another sugar factory in Kayonza District, but it also has land around the country to cultivate sugarcane, so there is hope that in the future its production will increase. . Currently, the Kabuye factory has the capacity to process 600 tons of sugarcane per day, and extract 50 tons of sugar from it, where 60% of the sugarcane the factory processes comes from ordinary farmers and 40% from factory farms.
