The Italian Catholic Church has announced that homosexual men are allowed to become priests, as long as they agree to remain celibate and refrain from spreading these beliefs about their sexuality. It is a decision published by the Italian Bishops' Conference, which is also recognized by the Vatican as the headquarters of the Church.
This document was approved by the Conference of Italian Bishops (CIE) in October 2024, only the Vatican approved it on January 9, 2025, where it will be used during a three-year trial period.
The
document says that "homosexuals" who want to join the priesthood must
commit to celibacy, just as other young men agree to celibacy. It goes on to
say that an applicant to the Seminary cannot be rejected simply because he has
homosexual feelings, as long as he chooses to remain celibate. The Church
announced that this decision does not contradict the existing decision not to
allow homosexuals to become priests, but it emphasizes that young people who
have homosexual feelings but have decided to keep themselves and do not want to
be accepted.
