In Rwanda, an injectable drug known as PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) has started to be used to protect people from contracting the AIDS virus, and now its trials have been started in two Health Centers in the city of Kigali.
The use of this drug was announced by the
RBC National Health Center last December 2024, and it was launched on January
03, 2025.
Administering this drug by injection,
started as an experiment in two Health Centers in the City of Kigali;
Traditional and Traditional.
Due to the way this trial will produce
results, this drug will start to spread to all other parts of the country as
reported by RBC.
Director General at RBC in charge of HIV
prevention, Dr. Basile Ikuzo, says that this PrEP drug, also known as
Cabotegravir (CAB-LA), will be given every two months in order to reduce the
number of pills that used to be taken every day.
It is an approach that will help those who
are at high risk of contracting HIV, including girls and women who work in the
trade, men who sleep with same-sex partners, people living with HIV, and
adolescents.
Dr. Basile Ikuzo said, “It is not a service
that will be provided to everyone in general. It is a program designed for
special people in high-risk groups who may face difficulties in taking their
medication every day. "The use of the PrEP injection can reduce the risk
of drug use, especially among young people."
Dr. Ikuzo went on to say that Rwanda has
reduced the number of new HIV infections at an impressive rate, from 10,000 a
year in the past ten years, to only 3,000 a year.
He said that the use of these needles will
contribute to the fight to prevent HIV infection, where the test of this method
will last for a year, otherwise it will be used for the next one.
"After the trial, we will do a
statistical analysis to determine if we will expand this program to all clinics
or if we will continue to use pills."
As usual in HIV prevention services in
Rwanda, the use of this needle is also being provided free of charge, and RBC
is preparing a new campaign to introduce this new method, which will be carried
out before the end of June ( 06) 2025.
