Police in Mozambique have announced that more than 1,500 prisoners have escaped from prison, hiding behind the ongoing political unrest in the country, based on the results of a disputed election.
In
a press conference, Police Chief Bernardino Rafael said that 33 people were
killed and 15 others were injured in the clashes with security guards. He added
that about 150 of the fugitives have been recaptured.
The
protests again disappeared on Monday, December 23, 2024, after the Supreme
Court confirmed the victory of the FRELIMO party, in the presidential elections
held in October 2024. The FRELIMO party has been in power for 49 years. .
Commander
Rafael said that tomorrow, Wednesday, December 25, 2024, groups of
anti-government protesters approached the prison in Maputo. He said that the
prisoners rioted, broke the prison wall and escaped.
Mozambique
has been plagued by unrest and protests since October 2024, when there was a
presidential election that was followed by controversy. The results of the
announced election showed that the candidate Daniel Chapo of the FRELIMO party
was the winner, but his opponent claimed that he was the winner, and the
protests ended.
The
results of the primary elections published in October showed that Chapo won
with 71% of the votes, while his main rival Venâncio Mondlane got 20% of the
votes. But the court said that Chapo won with 65% of the vote, while Mondlane
got 24% of the vote.
The
BBC reported that because of the protests, on the day before Christmas, the
city of Maputo was almost deserted, as almost all businesses were closed, and
people stayed in their homes to avoid being caught in the first bad riots. many
have taken place in the city since FRELIMO took power in 1975, when the South
African country gained independence.
FRELIMO
party offices, police stations, banks and factories were looted, vandalized and
burned in different parts of the country. Since Monday, at least 21 people have
been killed in the riots, as the Minister of Interior said on Tuesday evening,
December 24, 2024.
Mondlane,
who has since fled Mozambique, has been urging his supporters to continue
protesting against the results of the election, which he says was fraudulent.
In
a message posted on social media late last week, he said there could be
"new civil unrest" if the results of the election were not deterred.
In
total, 150 people have been killed in the three months since the election.
