Worldwide: Be careful! 35% of sex workers have HIV

The Minister of Health, Dr Sabin Nsanzimana, says that although he is happy that the AIDS virus is decreasing, there is a worrying group of prostitutes because 35% of them are infected.

However, some progress has been made as they have gone from 50% in the last 10 year

He says that the reason they are more exposed to infection is that they do not participate in protection programs, including the use of condoms, and they are also more exposed to sexually transmitted diseases and are also affected by epidemic diseases such as MPOX.

He said: "We have a class that needs attention, the figures I saw this morning are that prostitutes are the most affected by the AIDS virus at a rate of 35% compared to 50% in the last 10 years."

He continues, "This is related to not using protection methods such as using condoms and thus they are exposed to sexually transmitted diseases and are affected by epidemic diseases such as MPOX."

Minister Nsanzimana says that looking at the number of people infected with MPOX disease in Rwanda, the majority are from Rubavu District and the evidence shows that it is consistent with the movement of people at the borders entering the country through prostitutes.

One of the prostitutes in Rwempasha Sector says that he often receives clients, especially young people who want to have unprotected sex.

He also says that foreign clients also lure young prostitutes with large sums of money to have unprotected sex.

He said, "The fact that we live at the border also increases the infection due to the foreigners who live next to us, you don't know how they stand and come and cheat young people for a lot of money to have unprotected sex.

His colleague from the Rukomo Sector says that if he tells the truth, the client will not let him go but also advises him to go to the doctor immediately to take medicine to prevent infection.

He said, “Customers are different, there are those who are honest about your life but push it. If this happens, I advise him to immediately go to the doctor to take medication to prevent infection because we also have a role in protecting against new infections."

The Ministry of Health says that although the number of people infected with AIDS per day has gone from 25 people to about 10 people, there is a need to take action because most of the infected are young people between the ages of 18 and 20.

It also says that for every 100 people who die a day, seven are AIDS-related.

In order to reduce new infections, the Ministry of Health has set a plan that in the year 2030 at least 95% of people will know the status of their health on the AIDS virus, of which 95% have been exposed to the infection and take medication effectively so that 95% if they take medication, The virus would no longer be present in the blood.

The worker of the Rwandan Association for AIDS Support (ANSP+), Nizeyimana Jean Marie Vianney, says that this goal will be achieved because 90% of people know their status in relation to AIDS and many people are they began to understand it.

He says that efforts should be made against prostitutes so that they do not infect many.

He said, “If others are standing at 3% and those who commit prostitution are at 35%, it requires a lot of effort, especially campaigning because it infects many. Also, people should take more preventive measures, but even if they are infected, they should rush to the health centers and take medicines that prevent them from getting infected."
