Those close to him and pushing for unprecedented power to
be vested in the Presidency - power they plan to control - have to deal with a
real dichotomy when it comes to Donald Trump. When he first announced his
candidacy in 2015, he was largely dismissed as an unserious blowhard, just
another ego-driven attention-seeker. As time went by, though, his appeal to
certain segments of the population could not be denied. His message was all
about hate, anger, and fear, and it resonated with millions who felt they were
being left behind in a changing world. Trump convinced them that he - a
mediocre businessman in real life but playing a highly successful one on
reality TV - would make their lives better, somehow.
The question still remains: Was it the message or the
messenger that won in 2016? After a lackluster presidential term that saw few
“help-for-the-average-citizen” campaign promises kept and a disastrous response
to the Covid pandemic - the only real crisis his administration faced - the
American people turned him back into a private citizen in 2020. But the global
pandemic that damaged Trump’s presidency did worse to Biden’s. The inflation
caused by increased consumer demand after the worst of the pandemic passed put
major strain on supply lines no longer able to handle the surge, and
corporations jacked-up prices because, well, they could. According to exit
polls, inflated prices at the grocery store and gas pump were the main issues
in 2024. And since the history of American politics is to blame the current
administration for anything bad regardless of actual cause, Trump and
Republicans regained power in the 2024 elections.
Now let’s take a look at the power players here. Trump himself believes that he won the election because Trump is Trump and the electorate recognized his superiority. His MAGA crowds believe they are the ones who made it happen, even though his popular vote numbers aren’t that much higher than they were in 2020. And then we have some self-interested players with real power, especially money power. What, did you think that the likes of Elon Musk, Timothy Mellon, Peter Thiel, Miriam Adelson and twenty-some other billionaires have donated hundreds of millions of dollars to Trump and other Republicans out of the goodness of their hearts? Did you think that Vladimir Putin had nothing to do with the 2024 campaign?
These are people that have influence, that could make a call to Trump or any other powerful leader and be put right through. These are people that set up non-profits to push their own agendas, from making laws to nominating conservative judges they want appointed. These are people that own houses and properties here and abroad. These are people that don’t care about the prices at the store or the pump, that don’t care about immigration issues, reproductive rights, trans athletes, or drag queen story hours. But they’ve put a lot of cash into making sure that you care about them. They have been content to ride the Trump wagon for years. But they know he isn’t going to last forever. They may still feel they need him for a while. But they don’t trust him; they know as well as we do that he is unstable and lacking in impulse control. It seems obvious that they have plans for the future, plans that go well beyond Donald Trump and don’t include him. Their only concern is when they will move to implement those plans. That should be our concern, as well. These are not people that care about us or democratic ideals.
