The President of the Republic of Rwanda, Paul Kagame, who ended his two-year term as the Chairman of the Commonwealth of Nations, was replaced by the Prime Minister of Samoa, Fiamē Naomi Mata'afa.
At the Council of Heads of State and
Government of the Commonwealth (CHOGM 2024) which met in Apia, Samoa, President
Kagame revealed that it was a great value to lead this community, wishing Fiamē
Naomi Mata'afa the best of luck as she continues to lead the country the next
two years.
President Kagame said: “It was a great
value for Rwanda to be the Commonwealth Ambassador for the past two years. I
wish you the best of luck as the Head of the Commonwealth, Fiamē Prime Minister
Naomi Mata'afa.”
President Kagame continued to emphasize
that Rwanda is ready to support the Prime Minister Fiamē Naomi Mata'afa, who
confirmed how it is a great opportunity for Samoa to be the first country in
the Caribbean and Pacific Islands to host the CHOGM meeting.
Rwanda has chaired the 56-nation
Commonwealth of Nations since June 2022, replacing the United Kingdom which
last hosted the CHOGM in 2018.
Rwanda was supposed to continue the
leadership in 2020 but the meeting was postponed because the world was facing the
epidemic of COVID-19, international travel is not allowed to be done or many
people gather together in order to prevent its spread.
President Kagame stressed that Rwanda has
been replaced by leadership at a critical time, where the world is threatened by
climate change due to the increasing temperature.
“This is happening at a time of great
change. Temperatures are rising, so for small island developing nations in the
Caribbean and the Pacific, this is a matter of life and death. Africa and Asia
also share this burden…”
He emphasized that two-thirds of the
world's smallest countries are members of the Commonwealth of Nations.
"We cannot ignore the voices of those
burdened by this crisis, and they should not be begging for help."
The leadership of the Commonwealth is held by the country that hosts the CHOGM meeting every two years until the next meeting is held, which is why Samoa is scheduled to be replaced in 2026.
The General Secretariat of the Commonwealth
emphasizes that from the year 2022, Rwanda begins to lead the Community, a
significant step has been taken in striving for a better future in the
countries that are members of this community.
